Picking locks has been a big part of looting in the Elder Scrolls series. Each iteration is different for every game, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is no exception. This version of lockpicking is quite different from the past games and is still the same as the original Oblivion, but there is a learning curve, and you are going to need a lot of lockpicks. Luckily, they are scattered across the world, but there are a select few spots where you’re able to buy them.

Buying Lockpicks

This item isn’t usually for sale in most shops.

Lockpicks can occasionally be found on yourenemiesand inchests. They’re fairly common to find when you’re clearing out areas in the game. But sometimes you’ll need them in a pinch, and you may not have some ready and may have been unlucky enough for them not to pop up as loot.

Merchants will sell them from time to time in very small amounts; they’re somewhat reliably sold byblacksmithstoo, but it is just barely enough to get by. This isn’t a viable option if you aren’t confident in your lockpicking skills quite yet. Thankfully, this is where the Thieves Guild will have your back. The Thieves Guild will provide you with five fences that will sell you lockpicks as you become a member and achieve their max rank, with one fence being available in each major city.

These fences also help you sell any stolen goods you may have obtained on your travels, helping you buy even more lockpicks as more are available.

Find Shady Sam

This NPC will provide you with lockpicks as well as some extra options for taking down enemies.

The final and most reliable option when you are still at the beginning of the game will beShady Sam. He can be found north of theChestnut Handy Stablesoutside theImperial City. He will be somewhat hidden alongside the outer wall after a short walk past the stables. Right at the start of the game, you can visit Shady Sam once you have the gold to buy from him and snag some lockpicks and various debilitation concoctions to use on enemies.

Lockpicks are a major part of securing valuable loot in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and this remains unchanged in the Remaster. Make sure you gather as many as you can while you learn the mechanics revolving around it. Even when you fail with a lockpick, you’ll get experience with the skill, allowing your repeated attempts to make it easier for you as you continue playing the game.
