If there is one thing guaranteed to kill off many fan dreams, then Hollywood’s obsession with money and copyrights is top of the list. This is something thatVenomcreatorTodd McFarlanetouched on while addressing how he would love to see Venom enter the MCU and face off with Spider-Man. While the Marvel characters did come together inTobey Maguire’s third Spider-Man movie, the film was generally considered a bit of a mess, and it certainly didn’t allow Venom to live up to his full potential.
Venom Rumor Reveals How Marvel Franchise Will Continue Beyond Tom Hardy
A new rumor reveals the future of the film franchise after Tom Hardy’s departure.
Now that Tom Holland is set to swing back into action in a fourth solo MCU movie, and over at Sony,Tom Hardy’s time as Venom has seemingly coming to an endafter three movies, there is once again the unanswered question of whether we will finally get to see the symbiote make a full appearance in the MCU. The post-credits scene ofSpider-Man: No Way Homesuggests that a little piece of Venom is waiting to take over someone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline – no, it was not retconned byVenom: The Last Dance– but will it happen inSpider-Man 4? McFarlane seems to be hopeful it will come about sooner rather than later. Speaking toThe Direct, he said:

“My guess is that if they ever do it, which everybody is begging for because it’s a natural progression from a geek point of view that you just go, ‘Of course, Spider-Man has to meet Venom someday.’ And then after that, from a fan point of view, go, ‘Oh, well, Spider-Man also interacts with all these other characters over in the MCU, so could Venom be one of the bad guys or good guys, or could he join one of the teams.? I don’t know.”
Todd McFarlane Addresses the Frustrating Issue With IP Rights
The MCU is not the only franchise to suffer due to arguments over who owns which characters, but it certainly has more issues than most thanks to the sprawling list of writers and artists who have worked on Marvel Comics, and deals struck long before Marvel Studios was the Disney-owned powerhouse it is now. McFarlane touched on this when discussing dream team-ups from his youth, saying:
“As fans, we do that all the time. Right? I mean, I’ve been doing that since I was a kid. Like, if I saw Dracula and I saw Frankenstein man, wouldn’t it be cool if they got together? And then finally they did. They put them in the same film. What we don’t pay attention to as fans is, who owns the rights to these different ones?

While Marvel Studios has been able to retrieve the rights to some of its lost characters, such as Daredevil, the X-Men, and reportedly the Incredible Hulk, one that they will never likely regain full control over is Spider-Man, as Sony are well aware of just how lucrative the character is. So while fans, and McFarlane, would love to see many other Spider-Man characters invading the MCU, everyone can only wait and accept whatever comes our way when the big boys have made their deals.
