The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’sclosing chapter is almost upon us. Since 2017, the bold and ballsy housewife-comedienne Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) has captivated audiences with her charm, relatability, and natural flair for comedy. But all good things must come to an end, right? Throughout the four seasons, the series has depicted the highs, lows, and outrageous moments of Midge’s journey toward comedic stardom. However, the farewell season’s newly-releasedofficial trailerteases Midge on the heels of mega-success once more with the final season answering whether she can secure her “big break.”

The trailer opens with Midge amidst a snowy winter wonderland. While standing in front of an enormous billboard ad for The Gordy Ford Show, Midge answers the question of what drives her. “I want a big life. I want to break every rule there is,” the maverick comedienne proudly proclaims to an undisclosed male character — presumably Gordy — who sounds like a 1960s television host. Familiar antics and situations surround Midge as she presses forward fromseason four’s setback on her quest for stardom.

The video showcases life’s polarity of joy and struggle — as depicted by her signing an autograph for a fan on the street to smashing a glass object in her bathroom. At the height of her frustration within the trailer, Midge states, “It’s two steps forward, three steps back and I’m tired of it.” As always, her helpful, often rambunctious, manager Susie delivers the necessary words Midge needs to hear — that her break has arrived and Midge is a star that others clearly see as well. The trailer leaves much to be explored in the concluding season such as where will Midge’s big break come from and the roadblocks she encounters along the way. But one thing’s for certain, Midge is at the precipice of superstardom, and she intends to reach that pinnacle no matter the fight to get there.

Rachel Brosnahan Was The Glue That Kept the Show Together

The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselwould be nothing without its leading star Rachel Brosnahan. Her performance as the bawdy, rule-breaking, and aspiring comedienne has been universally lauded and eventually won her two consecutive Golden Globes and an Emmy for her portrayal of Midge Maisel. The accolades are well-deserved as Brosnahan deftly embodies the role so well that it would be hard to imagine anyone attacking the role with the same vigor. Last year, duringThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s FYC panel, the creatorsAmy Sherman-PalladinoandDaniel Palladinorevealed thatif they hadn’t found their star,The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselwould not exist.

The conversation occurred between the husband-wife duo and moderator Danny Strong. During the panel, Strong recalled a discussion where the pair mentioned they hadn’t found their star yet ahead of filming for the series. At that time, the Palladinos were adamant that they would not do the show if they couldn’t find the perfect person to portray Miriam “Midge” Maisel. Thankfully, they crossed paths with Brosnahan, and the rest was history.

“The thing about Rachel is she’s one of the most gifted, if maybe the most gifted, actress, I’ve ever had the chance to really work with this closely, and she can inhabit anything,” Sherman-Palladino mentioned. “There’s nothing she can’t do. That’s just the bottom line.”

The Palladinos had a clear vision for the character that Brosnahan was able to naturally emulate in her audition. Interestingly enough, hers stood out amongst the others for one super-specific reason: she was the only actress who knew that you have to lean into the mic as a stand-up comic.

“If you don’t have the balls to do that, you gotta get off the stage. The minute she did that, we were kind of like, ‘We’re sold’ ’cause it didn’t matter what happened after that,” Sherman-Palladino explained. “All we knew is she was the one who had the balls. She had the toughness. She understood the basic thing about comedy, which is you’re up there alone. It’s fucking awful. If the audience turns on you as a stand-up, they’re turning on you.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselfarewell season premieres with the first three episodes on April 14, followed by one episode weekly until the finale on May 26.
