Vanguards are Space Marines who typically act as saboteurs and infiltrators in the 40K universe. Their role inWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2is a little different, but even here, Vanguards maintain the same level of mobility and melee combat proficiency depicted in the lore and tabletop game. If you’re someone who loves taking down high-priority targets at close range, theVanguard classis for you.

Space Marine 2: How to Unlock Mastery Points in Operations

Master your weapons to unlock their full potential.

The Vanguard playstyle can be difficult to master, but you can learn the basic gist of how it works by completing all the class Trials in the Armoring Hall. These Trials allow you to practice using the grappling hook and will teach you some of the other core mechanics. In addition, you’ll also earn Requisition and Master-CraftedArmory Databy performing well. Here’s how to get high marks in each of the three Vanguard trials:

Cut The Synapse

The first trial for the Vanguard class requires you to kill two Tyranid Warriors and several small groups ofHormagaunts. You’ll need to move around a lot to complete the Trial, so be sure to take full advantage of theGrapnel Launcher. You can eliminate the enemies in whichever way you see fit but, ideally, you’ll want to use your ability to close the distance and take out the big guys in melee before using your gun to finish off the Gaunts. Your loadout for this challenge will consist of anInstigator Bolt Carbine,Bolt Pistol, andCombat Knife. You’ll have 40 seconds to clear the area.

Start by making a beeline for theTyranid Warrior (Venom Cannon)that spawns on the far side of the room. Kill a few of theHormagauntson your way there, but don’t waste too much time on them. you’re able to use one of yourGrapnel Launchercharges on a Gaunt to close the distance and the second one on the Warrior itself. Alternatively, you can save both charges for the Warrior and use more sprinting to compensate for lost time. Once you’re in range, kill the Warrior as quickly as possible and turn around to finish off theHormagaunts. As soon as you do that, another Warrior and some more Gaunts will spawn on the opposite side of the room. Repeat the process to successfully complete the Trial.

Small enemies take massive damage whenever you kill a big Tyranid in their vicinity. Focus on eliminating the Warriors and you’ll also eliminate most of the Gaunts in the process.

Grapnel Launcher

The second Trial is essentially identical to the first one, but here you’ll have to eliminate three groups of enemies instead of just two. The good news is that the arena is smaller, and the enemies are easier to reach. You’ll once again need to make good use of theGrapnel LauncherandCombat Knifeto successfully clear the Trial in the allotted time of 40 seconds. You also get anInstigator Bolt CarbineandBolt Pistol, but you may easily beat the entire thing without firing a shot.

As soon as you start, run toward the platform on the left and use theGrapnel Launcheron theTyranid Warrior (Venom Cannon)once you’re in range. Kill it as quickly as possible using theCombat Knifeand don’t worry about the smaller enemies running around. Just like before, once you kill the big guy the small ones will die as well. Once you’re done with the first group, rinse and repeat to eliminate the other two groups that spawn, and you can claim another victory.

Perfectly Timed

The third and final Trial for the Vanguard class is arguably the easiest of the bunch. There are quite a few enemies to deal with, but you have 80 seconds at your disposal to eliminate everything, which is quite generous, all things considered. You do have some additional objectives that require you to kill five enemies in melee and five enemies with theGrapnel Launcher, but you shouldn’t have any issues pulling that off. Your loadout will be identical to the one you got in the first two Trials.

Make your way toward the first wave of enemies and keep an eye out for theTyranid Warrior (Venom Cannon)that spawns shortly after. Use theGrapnel Launcheron the Warrior and beat it to a pulp in the name of the Emperor. You’ll kill most of the surroundingHormagauntsin the process, but there should still be enough left for you to eliminate using theCombat Knifeand special ability to fulfill the two objectives. Once you’ve cleared the area, another Warrior accompanied by a handful of Gaunts will spawn in the back of the room. Use theGrapnel Launcheragain and repeat the process.

Use theGrapnel Launcheron the Warriors when there areHormagauntsnearby. The ability does AoE damage, so don’t worry about having to target five different enemies to complete the objective.
