The Returnalupdate arrives unexpectedly onPlayStationconsoles to enhance the game onPS5 Projust in time for its fourth anniversary.
Returnal Enhanced for PS5 Pro
Time flies — one day you’re celebratingReturnal’srelease on PS5 back in April 2021, and the next, it’s been four years already; the same goes for otherPlayStation Studiostitles.
Although PC players had to wait nearly two years to experience it on desktop and/or Steam Deck, the bullet-hell adventure finally became available, and everyone was pleased.
Let’s not forgetReturnal: Ascension, the free expansion that added two new game modes: a cooperative one and a survival mode known as the Tower of Sisyphus.
Unfortunately for PC gamers, today’s good news isn’t for them — it’s for everyone who owns a PS5 Pro, whether since launch or even as of yesterday.
Both the publisherSony Interactive Entertainmentand the developerHousemarquehave released a new version of Returnal to celebrate four years of the game.
PS5 Prousers will now be able to experience the game at a higher resolution — up to 2.5 times more pixels during gameplay, which is always welcome in a game like this.
No Enhancements for Base PS5 Consoles
Sadly, base PS5 and first-generation console owners won’t benefit from the improvements, as they’re focused solely on Sony’s upgraded hardware.
Some users have asked whether a similar update is coming to PC, especially since the last one was back on August 16, 2025, shortly after the port launched. Once again, the answer doesn’t look promising.
Housemarque’s Future: Saros
Meanwhile, the PlayStation studio continues work onSaros, Housemarque’s new title, which was revealed during the February 2024State of Play.
Housemarque also teased on social media that we’ll see an extended gameplay reveal for Saros later in 2025 — also great news for fans.
Not much is known aboutSaros yet, but the studio confirmed that its budget is comparable toAlan Wake 2, which reportedly cost around $70 million to develop.
