Our own Chris Scott Barr would likely never forgive me for saying it, but one of the reasons I’ve never really gotten into either Guitar Hero or Rock Band is because it all looks a bit naff. Plastic instruments end up looking like kids toys, unless you’re willing to invest some serioushack-timein them. SoPeak Products' Starpex could actually bring new gamers like myself onboard; styled after a real guitar, it has an instrument-quality, high-gloss lacquered finish with a hardwood body, neck, and headstock handcrafted by a leading guitar manufacturer.
Compatible with both Guitar Hero and Rock Band, there’s a choice of connectivity – either wired or 2.4GHz wireless – and a modular design that allows for customization of different parts of the design. Controls include a “Speed Star” power/overdrive button, a built-in tilt sensor and optimized whammy bar. The ten fret buttons and strum bar are also enhanced, meaning both solo and traditional play is possible depending on which title you’ve chosen.
At the moment you’ll need either a PS2 or PS3 to use the Starpex, and Peak are being coy about exactly when you’ll be able to buy one. Expect it roughly in August 2008, priced at a vaguely reasonable (for a guitar, if not a controller) $179.95.
