Lu Hongliu is a boss that you’ll find yourself fighting inWuchang: Fallen Feathersfairly early on. This is a simple boss to decipher in terms of the moves it will use, but it can most certainly catch you off guard if you aren’t prepared. It will have attacks that can cover large areas, jump, and several ranged attacks at its disposal.

Lu Hongliu Phase 1 Attacks
Be ready for this, boss. It can close the distance quickly and effectively.
To start the fight out, Lu Hongliu will usually stop eating and perform a jumping attack to go straight to your position. This attack is followed by a sweep from its left arm, looking to catch any players who dodge backwards instead of forward or to the side. Both of these attacks are easy to deal with for the opening of the fight.
Knowing that the boss is going to end up right on top of you no matter what, as well as following up the attack, allows you to position yourself correctly instantly. Find a section of the arena where you may reliably dodge left, right, or forward into the main leap attack. Ideally, you will have dodged through the attack and be positioned behind Lu Hongliu, and unleash a charged heavy attack.

A few moves can follow the initial attack, one of which will be when the boss stands up and goes for a large swipe from your right side. This is another easy attack you can dodge around and position yourself to deal a swift set of attacks while it is getting ready for the next attack. There is another variation of this attack where the boss will stand up in the same fashion and go for a similar strike, but this other version will strike 3 times in total.
One of the final phase 1 melee attacks will be a ground slam, where the boss will stand up and have both arms above its head. The move is telegraphed and easy to avoid, opening the boss up for some attacks to work towards breaking Lu Hongliu’s stance.

Ranged Attacks
One of the ranged attacks that can follow any of these melee attacks is where it will kneel onto the ground and prepare a spit attack. With the spit spewing a damaging stream of blood that will slowly move from left to right when you are facing the boss. For this attack, you only need to dodge through the stream or run along either side before the attack reaches you.
One other variant of this attack will also be a vertical version of the stream. This second version of the attack is notably easier to dodge, and if done at a time when the boss is almost maxed out on stance damage, you can move in for an Obliteration Attack when it has been stunned.

The phase 1 moveset for Lu Hongliu isn’t as varied as many of the other bosses you’ll run into. There is a specific set of attacks that the boss is going to use, and they are used in a way to teach you the value of dodging out of many attacks this early into the game. If you aren’t confident that one of your attacks will land without issue, it is best to play defensively, even if you lose out on maintaining the boss’s stance meter.

Lu Hongliu Phase 2 Attacks
Be careful, as the boss will now have some new ways to throw out some damage.
To mark the start of phase 2, Lu Hongliu will stand up and spit blood into their hands before standing up completely. During this transition, it is smart to use as many attacks as you possibly can to get ready for an obliteration later on. After it stands upright and is no longer in the phase transition animation, the boss will then perform one of several attacks. The main attack that you’ll see after the transition will be when the boss performs a swipe at your left-hand side, which will be followed up by both claws swiping from front to back.
Shortly after phase 2 starts, there will also be a new scream that the boss will use to stun you. However, the boss also can’t attack during this and is locked in the animation. You will need to repeatedly tap the dodge button to break out of it.

When you break out of the scream, you’re able to freely deal damage to Lu Hongliu before they start using the phase 2 version of the prior ranged attacks. For this version, the boss will spew this blood stream around the arena in a sweeping fashion. Moving left to right for some time before kneeling back on the ground.
After kneeling, you will need to be careful, as this will be followed up with an explosion when the boss sits upright. When Lu Hongliu ends this interaction, it will be completely still, only kneeling and recovering from the onslaught of attacks.

If you’ve been able to keep up with some damage by poking and prodding the boss to keep the stance meter from dropping, this will be the opportunity to unleash everything you have available. This is one of the best parts of the fight to output as much damage as possible and perform another Obliteration Attack, which can stun the boss further and earn you the kill.
While Lu Hongliu can feel like an oppressive boss, especially so soon after you start the game, it is more of a lesson in how the mechanics work. This fight will teach you about maintaining stance damage on the boss while being defensive and dodging attacks. While it is harder to break this boss’s stance, you may still manage to do it with well-timed attacks throughout the fight. Doing so will allow for two Obliteration finishers at key points in the fight that end up protecting you from danger due to the long stun window the attacks offer.
