After the award-winning success of the streaming hit Arcane, Riot Games is taking another big swing with the League of Legends franchise byreleasing a physical card game, currently called “Project K,” sometime next year.Details are scarce, but according to Riot, the game “has unique gameplay and is best when played with friends and in person.” That doesn’t say much, but they also shared a few of the cards, which show League characters like Viktor, Jinx, Volibear and Yasou, alongside location cards including the Zaun Warrens, which lets you get a small taste of what to expect.
“Project K” is Riot’s first attempt at a physical card game, but it comes after the digital card game, Legends of Runeterra, has been reduced to a shell of its former self following years of disappointing performance. Originally, the upcoming physical game was going to be exclusive to China, but today Riot revealed that they are seeking a partner for a worldwide release. The company also hasn’t mentioned if this will be a full collectible card game like Magic: The Gathering or thePokémon TCG, or if it will instead be a boxed experience, like Legendary or Doomtown.

The Expanding World Of League Of Legends
Riot Games has been expanding League of Legends into other genres for years, including the turn-based RPG Ruined King, the platformer Convergence, the rhythm runner Hextech Mayhem, the action-RPG Mageslayer and the adventure game Song of Nunu. Alongside the Project K announcement,Riot revealed that the long-awaited fighting game will now be known as 2XKO, and though the MMO that fans have been waiting to see for years wasn’t revealed, it also wasn’t canceled, so no news is good news. Though the gaming spin-offs have been a mixed bag,Arcane is set to win more awardsfollowing the end of the series. A new animated show, focused on the kingdom of Noxus which includes champions like LeBlanc, Swain, Katarina and Darius is currently in the works.
The resurgent popularity of Riot Games flagship title has so far had no noticeable effect on the multiple spin-offs, but Project K could be the one that reverses the trend and goes on to become the company’s latest hit.

The problem facing Riot Games Project K in 2025, though, is the imminent arrival of the Final Fantasy expansion for Magic: The Gathering, and thecontinued success of Pokémon TCG Pocketthreatens to crowd out the card-based gaming market.League of Legends remains one of the most popular games in the world. The recent 2024 World Championships was watched by 6.9 million fans around the world, which is the highest since the pandemic-era Championships in 2020 and 2021. The resurgent popularity of Riot Games flagship title has so far had no noticeable effect on the multiple spin-offs, but Project K could be the one that reverses the trend and goes on to become the company’s latest hit. For now, fans are waiting to learn more about how it will play, and if their favorite champion will be included, except for Shyvana players, because they know the Demacian dragon will continue to be ignored for another year.
