Developer Heart Machine and publisher Arc Games have stealth-released a free update toHyper Light Breaker. Titled “Double Down,” the update was revealed as part of Future Games Show at Gamescom 2025, and it adds new content to explore in the game, which is currently in early access on PC viaSteam.

A Unique Open World Roguelike

Hyper Light Breaker is an action roguelike that is part of the same franchise as indie successHyper Light Drifter. In the new game, players must explore 3D open worlds and battle through an area called Overgrowth, which is composed of many scattered biomes.

It’s possible to either face the challenges alone or count on friends to help with defeating the hordes there through online co-op. As players advance through the areas and make their builds stronger by overcoming tough situations, they’ll get ever closer to beating the Crowns and the Abyss King.

The Novelties in the Double Down Update

The Double Down update introduces various additions to the game, including a new playable character, a new boss and new mechanics, with full details shared on the game’s officialSteam page. According to the developers, these updates are meant to improve the game according to the players' feedback so far.

The new playable character is the Breaker Gravenheart, who has joined Pherus Bit. Hailing from the Shattered Fortress, this fighter is better inclined to the Tank role than the others, having the perk of refilling Armor Shards by parrying.

Meanwhile, the enemies now have a new boss composed of twins. Bersia and Vesia are a “deadly duo” that players will be able to find in the Overgrowth. Having to fight against both at the same time promises to be a challenging experience and players may have to choose which of them would be better to focus on first.

By completing the exploration in the Overgrowth, players will unlock a new feature called the Glitch System. It works as a sort of New Game Plus system that allows players to enable modifiers to increase difficulty and make the challenges much tougher. The higher risk, the better rewards players will be able to get from this system.

These floating islands are hanging above the Overgrowth, and they’re not the only new area that was added in the update, which also includes Ruined Outskirts Overgrown Building, Jeweled Spire Clawed APC and more.
