Himmel’s presence in the life and story of Frieren is undeniable. Every element in the story eventually circles back to the hero. His actions have transcended his lifespan to affect Frieren in every sphere of her being.

Frieren’s encounter with the Phantom Demon shows how she has changed
In episode 5 ofFrieren, the titular protagonist and Fern visit the Willie Region, where people claim to have seen ghosts of their dead family and acquaintances. Frieren successfully deduced that it was a monster who consumes humans by luring them with phantoms of the dead who were dear to them. These kinds of monsters are called Einsam or Phantom Demon.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Ditched Himmel and Frieren’s Past for One of the Best Aspects of the Anime
Frieren has had past experiences with them when they tried to lure her by using the phantom of her master, Flamme. However, when she enters the forest in episode 5, she encounters the phantom of Himmel instead of Flamme. In fact, the phantom even tells her to shoot him, true to Himmel’s nature.
This scene not only shows the nobleness of Himmel but also how Frieren’s heart has changed over time. Before the only one close to her was her master, Flamme, but eventually, Himmel took over that place. But even more astonishing is the fact that the phantom replicated his character perfectly, even encouraging Frieren to shoot it.
Frieren is challenged to deal with a future that has no Himmel
This particular phantom of Himmel proved that Frieren has been changed by the hero. By the time she came to her senses, Himmel was already gone. Even the smallest of actions in Frieren’s life is shaped by Himmel and the hero party. She likes collecting random spells because of the compliments she had received from Himmel and the others. She had alsocherished the ring that Himmel had gifted herdespite not knowing its meaning for decades.

Just like how humans are shaped by their fond memories, Frieren’s personality is also shaped by Himmel’s presence. Even in his absence, she can’t help but relate various events back to him.Himmel might have passed away, but under no circumstances is he the past for Frieren. His presence is very much felt in every step of the protagonist.
Thus, Frieren’s actual challenge isn’t to deal with her past with Himmel but the future without him. Himmel knew that Frieren would not be able to love him back, and even worse, she is doomed to walk a neverending and solitary path. Thus, he left his traces everywhere, a mortal trying his best to keep an immortal a semblance of company.
