Have you ever wanted to see whatMatthew McConaugheywould look like balding and in a pair of tighty-whities ala Walter White fromBreaking Bad? Well, then you should probably check out the trailer for his upcoming movieGold, which was just released online. Outside of the actor’s crazy look in the movie,Goldboasts a stellar cast, a very promising premise, and the first trailer has us thinking this could be an Oscar contender.

Goldis being released by TWC-Dimension, who released the trailer online today. The movie is loosely based on real events and centers on a pair of men, played byMatthew McConaugheyandEdgar Ramirez, who venture into the Indonesian jungle in search of gold. They wind up finding an awful lot of it, which leads to a big scandal and an awful lot of money for people to fight over. The movie also features performances fromBryce Dallas Howard,Toby KebbellandCorey Stoll}.

The trailer is very well cut together and features a lot of shots to take note of, perhaps most notably the shot at the end which featuresMcConaugheytouching a tiger. It also takes place in the late 80s and early 90s, so that aesthetic is a really interesting and pretty spot on. There is also quite a few shots of theIndonesian jungle, which are quite gorgeous and expansive. As good as the CGI jungle looked inThe Jungle Book, it is pretty hard to beat the real thing.

Outside of his trademark voice,McConaugheyis pretty much unrecognizable in this first trailer forGold, which looks to be his best bet at getting an Oscar nomination this year. The movie also has a prime time Christmas release date, which would seem to tip the odds further in favor of this movie getting some recognition come awards season. It has been a mixed road forMcConaugheyever since he took home his Oscar forDallas Buyers Cluba couple of years ago, with a few hits and arguably just as many misses. This year alone he has had two pretty big bombs in the form ofFree State of Jones, another movie that looked like it may have had Oscar hopes, andThe Sea of Trees, which was lamented by critics and faltered at the box office. On the flip side, he also starred inTrue Detective,Interstellarand lent his voice for the very well-likedKubo and the Two Strings.

Goldis the epic tale of one man’s pursuit of the American dream, to discover gold. Starring Oscar winnerMatthew McConaugheyas Kenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, he teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard, but keeping it would be even harder, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms ofWall Street. The film is inspired by atrue story.

Goldis directed byStephen Gaghan, who previously directedSyrianaand wrote the drug trade movieTraffic. The script was written byPatrick Massett&John Zinman, who are also producing along withMcConaughey.Goldis set to hit theaters on Christmas Day in the U.S. Be sure to watch the trailer for yourself below.
