What Makes a Pokemon a Pseudo-Legendary?

“Pseudo-Legendary” is a fan-made term. This may make it seem as though the criteria to be a part of the group is arbitrary. However, these qualities have been consistent throughout the games, as each generation has introduced at least one new pseudo-legendary Pokemon. For a Pokemon to be considered a pseudo-legendary, it must:

If a Pokemon is missing even one of these criteria, it isn’t considered a pseudo-legendary Pokemon. For example, Volcarona requires 1,250,000 experience points to get to Level 100, but its evolutionary line only consists of two Pokemon, and its base stat total is 550 rather than 600. It’s still a very powerful Pokemon, but it isn’t specifically a pseudo-legendary.

Is There an Official Term for Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon?

While there’s no official name for pseudo-legendary Pokemon, it’s safe to say Pokemon are being intentionally designed with these criteria in mind. As evidence, thePokemon Center merchandise stores in Japan released a “Late Bloomers”set of goods featuring pseudo-legendary Pokemon and their pre-evolutions, as seen in the image above. This is likely in reference to the fact that pseudo-legendary Pokemon evolve at high levels and, because of their experience gain grouping, require more experience to reach those levels for evolution.“Late Bloomers” is the closest to an official term that has ever been used for these Pokemon, but it has thus far not been used outside of the merchandise line.

In addition, the pseudo-legendary title is not used amongst Japanese players. Instead, the term“600 Club”is used to describe all Pokemon with a base stat total of 600, which is then further categorized into legendary Pokemon, Mythical Pokemon, and regular Pokemon. This includes pseudo-legendaries, Mega Evolutions, andArchaludon, who has a base stat total of 600 but doesn’t meet the other criteria to be considered a pseudo-legendary.

Niki’s love for video games encompasses a wide range of genres, but she is especially fond of RPGs, adventure games, visual novels, simulation games, and fighting games. Her favorite video game-related pastime is asking her unwieldy backlog why she doesn’t have any new games to play. When she isn’t playing or writing about video games, she’s playing with cats, journaling, painting, or obsessing over the latest news in the world of stationery and planners.
