For decades, fans’ memories of theHarry Potterfilms have been associated with nostalgia and happiness following the epic battles and a world steeped in magic. But behind the scenes ofHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, director Alfonso Cuarón had a rather unorthodox vision for the film’s most memorable creature, Buckbeak the hippogriff.

Apparently, Alfonso Cuarón had a bizarre demand while filming the movie, since he didn’t want to settle for a polished CGI masterpiece. Therefore, seeking out a dose of raw authenticity that took everyone by surprise, Cuarón demanded that Buckbeak channel his inner wild animal. The filmmaker’s desire surprisingly resulted in one of the most hilarious and NSFW moments in the franchise.
Alfonso Cuarón Wanted Buckbeak to be Wild as Well as Majestic
Considering his iconic movieGravitystarring Sandra Bullock,Alfonso Cuarónhas created a name for himself in the industry, based on his unique vision and attention to detail. But surprisingly, his direction duringHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabanwent beyond just aesthetics.
“They make him seem so much more annoying”: The Best Harry Potter Movie Did 1 Fan-Favorite Character So Dirty That it’s Unbelievable J.K. Rowling Let it Slide
According to reports fromThe Guardian, Alfonso Cuarón had envisioned the animatronic hippogriff, Buckbeak, as more than just a majestic creature soaring through the skies. Cuarón had apparently wanted to portray the beast’s raw and untamed nature, with all the charm and chaos that comes with it.
Therefore, the filmmaker asked the effects team to go back and show him a hippogriff after it had just been mating in the woods. And quite convincingly Alfonso Cuarón got to see a wild beast rather than a nice bit of animation. Thereafter, with a vision in his mind, Cuarón sought an authentic version of the hippogriff.

Bypushing for a more realistic representation, Alfonso Cuarón was aiming for a creature that embodied the spirit of adolescence—full of energy and unpredictability. Therefore, as per reports, his demands regarding Buckbeak led to an NSFW scene in the movie, during Harry’s first meeting with the creature.
Michael Eames Decided to Add the NSFW Pooping Part
Enter Framestore’s Michael Eames, the visual effects maestro who worked on the computerized characters inHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. According to his interview viaHuffPost, Eames noted taking Alfonso Cuarón’s demands and running with them—quite literally. When tasked with bringing this wild creature to life, Eames decided to lean into the realism that Cuarón sought.
“It’s the best film out of them all, but one of the worst adaptations”: Harry Potter Fans Consider 1 Movie to be Peak Cinema But Potterheads Know it Skimped Through Major Details
That’s when Michael Eames and his team developed a scene that most people overlooked in the films, but for the ones who noticed, the sequence simply caught them off guard. According to Eames, there was only one way to show a natural and more realistic representation of Buckbeak—to show him take a dump on the forest floor. Hilarious right?
I can’t really go into too much detail with that, but there were some pretty outrageous things that slipped past editorial in those days, but I supposed as an animator you were kind of always looking for an opportunity to have a bit of a laugh on the side, and I guess that’s where that came from.

Hinting at the “outrageous” pooping sequence inHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, animation wizard Michael Eames claimed that it was the only way they could offer a naturalistic feel to the animatronic hippogriff. Trying to find a way to fit the character effortlessly in a realistic environment, Eames admitted to finding the dumping scene most accurate and worthwhile.
I think we were trying very much to get a naturalistic feel to the way that Buckbeak behaved as a character, his whole being animalistic. I think he was described at the time by [director] Alfonso Cuarón as a sort of adolescent teenager, so we were trying to kind of place this character… in a very sort of real environment. It felt like something that he would do naturally if there was an opportunity, would be a good idea.

Therefore, the scene where Buckbeak slyly pooped onscreen during his first encounter with Harry, was born from Alfonso Cuarón’s insistence on portraying the hippogriff as more than just a creature of beauty. So it seems, the filmmaker’s desire finally came true in this hilariously wild moment.
